World Kidney Day is a health awareness initiative observed globally that focuses on the importance of having healthy kidneys. It also aims at reducing kidney-related health issues and encouraging awareness about innovations in treatments. This year, it is being celebrated today, March 14.

Early diagnosis of kidney-related ailments and the consumption of healthy food can help ensure the healthy working of the kidneys. A Nephrologist, Dr Preeti Bansal, interacted with News18 and revealed the foods that can ensure the healthy working of the kidneys.

1. Blueberries

Blueberry or strawberries hold a significant amount of importance in maintaining the healthy working of the kidneys. Blueberries are also packed with abundant amounts of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants which prevent inflammation in the kidneys. Nephritis is an inflammation of the kidneys.

2. Curd or buttermilk

As per Dr Preeti, kidneys are highly vulnerable to the impact of toxins and can be severely damaged by them. Therefore, things that cleanse and detoxify the kidneys should be consumed. For this purpose, you can consume curd and buttermilk that contain probiotics which are a storehouse of good bacteria levels.

3. Millets

Consumption of millet like Barley, Ragi, Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa), etc. helps in cleansing the kidneys. Millet, or Ragi, should be essentially consumed by patients suffering from kidney-related ailments due to its low sodium content. High sodium intake can elevate blood pressure and strain the kidneys. By incorporating millet into your diet, especially Ragi, which is low in sodium, you can reduce renal stress and maintain appropriate blood pressure.

4. Green-leafy vegetables

Intake of green leafy vegetables also helps in the healthy functioning of the kidneys as they have anti-inflammatory properties. They eradicate the inflammation from the kidneys. Leafy greens are a storehouse of potassium, which is required by people suffering from kidney disease. The amount of potassium levels the kidney patients can have each day will depend on the stage of kidney disease or the type of dialysis they receive.

5. Vitamin C Foods

Vitamin C helps in dissolving the kidney stones easily. Foods rich in vitamin C such as citrus fruits like oranges, cucumbers and broccoli are effective in keeping the kidneys healthy.
