A podcast has launched featuring interviews with politicians, economists, and industry insiders in Scotland.

It is hosted by BBC Scotland property expert Brian Gilmour, as well as former Glasgow City Council leader Steven Purcell.

Gilmour currently runs Indigo Square, a residential lettings and block management firm with branches in Glasgow and Ayrshire, while he has nearly three decades of experience in the Scottish property industry. He already appears fortnightly as “Mr Blue Sky” on the Radio Scotland morning property surgery segment.

The Scottish Housing Podcast is designed to appeal to anyone who is interested in housing, as well as being assessable.

The podcast is available on Apple, Youtube, Amazon, Spotify and here.

Scotland’s housing market

The Scottish government declared a national housing emergency in May, in the wake of a similar move by five councils, including the two biggest cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The councils cited issues ranging from pressure on homelessness services, rising property prices and high levels of temporary accommodation.

The Scottish government published its Housing (Scotland) Bill, which includes plans to introduce long-term rent controls and grant tenants significant new rights.

However, the future of the legislation is currently unclear following the resignation of Humza Yousaf and the removal of two Scottish Green ministers from government.

Meanwhile, the latest quarterly figures show a worrying slowdown in the number of new homes being built in Scotland.

Housing data published in March showed that there were 20,992 new-build home completions and 16,017 starts last year, down 11% and 24% respectively compared to 2022.
