During January and February, a variety of garden plants showcase vibrant blooms that brighten up the whole house. Indoor plants not only beautify the surroundings but also help cleanse the air. Some varieties need more attention than others. For example, Peace Lilies thrive in lower light conditions, whereas Money Plants require more light, despite both being categorized as indoor plants.

It is essential to shield indoor plants from cold temperatures during winter because, without proper care, they may wilt quickly. Local18 conversed with Hoshiyar Singh, the proprietor of Brij Nursery in Dehradun, to gather simple tips for caring for indoor plants.

Hoshiyar Singh shared that just as excessive heat can be harmful, too much cold can also negatively affect plants, leading to wilting and decay. Plants such as Spider Plants, Snake Plants, Peace Lilies, Areca Palms, Orchids, Anthuriums, and Guzmanias can add aesthetic appeal and pleasant scents to your home. However, these plants necessitate particular care.

5 Gardening Tips for Indoor Plants

  1. Proper watering techniques: Overwatering can result in root rot. Water your plants only when the top layer of soil begins to dry out. Less water should be given in winter and more in summer.
  2. Take care of sunlight: Certain indoor plants require abundant sunlight (like Money Plants and Areca Palms), whereas others thrive with less light (such as Peace Lilies and Snake Plants). However, avoid exposing any plants to direct sunlight, as this may burn their leaves.
  3. Be mindful of fertilizers: Incorporate organic fertilizers (like cow manure or vermicompost) once a month. Additionally, some common household items can serve as fertilizers. Banana peels, tea leaves, and eggshells function as natural nutrient sources.
  4. Preserve moisture for the plants: Indoor plants flourish with moderate humidity, so periodically mist them with a spray bottle. Position the plants away from air conditioners and heating units to help retain moisture.
  5. Regularly clean and prune the leaves: Dust tends to accumulate on indoor plant leaves. Use a damp cloth to wipe them clean. This practice aids in their respiration. Consistently trim off any dead or dried leaves to promote the growth of new foliage.
