Makar Sankranti festivities are known by various names in different parts of India.

Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on January 15, 2024, across the country. This Hindu festival is considered to be auspicious and marks the transition of the sun from the zodiac sign of Sagittarius to Capricorn. Since the sun moves from the South to the North, the festival is also dedicated to the Sun God, Surya and marks a new beginning. On this special day, people take baths in holy rivers in the morning. There is also the tradition of donation on this day. As per beliefs, worshipping Lord Shiva on this day can reap benefits. Makar Sankranti festivities are known by various names in different parts of India. In Kerala, it is known as Makar Sankranti, while in Assam it is Magh Bihu. In Himachal Pradesh, it is Maghi Saaji, Uttarayan in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh and Poush Sankranti in West Bengal. In Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated as Pongal; while in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, it is referred to as Sankranti. Apart from the solar deity, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi are also worshipped on this day.

As per astrologer and Vastu consultant Pandit Hitendra Kumar Sharma, anointing Mahadev on Makar Sankranti is special. According to him, one can get rid of Pitra Dosh by doing this. If Lord Shiva is anointed following proper rituals, then he will be pleased and bless his devotees, which will bring happiness in their lives.

When must abhishekam be performed?

On the day of Makar Sankranti, a rare coincidence will occur. As per the expert, worshipping Lord Shiva during this time will be beneficial. The expert said that Lord Shiva will be seated on Mount Kailash till 2:16 pm. If he is worshipped and abhishekam is performed during this time, then there will be prosperity in the lives of devotees.

How to anoint Lord Shiva on this auspicious day?

Pandit Hitendra Kumar Sharma shared that on the day of Makar Sankranti, Lord Shiva should be anointed by mixing water and Ganga water. If someone is on a pilgrimage during this time, then a bath should be taken in the holy waters like Ganga, Godavari and Narmada rivers. During the puja, anoint the Lord with cow’s milk and pure ghee. Then offer black sesame seeds, some flowers, bel patra and hemp to Lord Shiva and chant Shiva Panchakshari Mantra.
