While the rainy season brings lush greenery and much-needed relief from the heat, it also creates challenges for furniture at home. The increased humidity during this time can lead to dampness, foul odour, and the growth of fungus, especially on wooden furniture such as cupboards, beds, tables, and drawers.
So, is there a home remedy to protect furniture from moisture damage? Yes – there are several easy and natural DIY solutions that can help you preserve your furniture during the monsoon. Here’s how:
Natural Dehumidifier
You can make a simple dehumidifier at home using rock salt or baking soda. Fill a small bowl with 4–5 teaspoons of rock salt or baking soda and place it near your wooden furniture or inside cupboards. It will absorb moisture from the air and help prevent fungus formation.
Homemade Anti-Fungal Spray
In a spray bottle, mix 1 cup of water with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and 5 drops of tea tree oil. Shake well and spray lightly on your furniture once or twice a week. Both vinegar and tea tree oil have natural anti-fungal properties that help stop mould and mildew.
Neem Leaves or Camphor Sachets
Prepare small pouches using old cotton cloth and fill them with dried neem leaves or camphor. Place these sachets in drawers, wardrobes, or storage areas of beds. They help absorb excess moisture and repel insects, odours, and fungi—making them ideal for enclosed storage spaces.
Use a Plastic Base Under Furniture
Place small plastic sheets or cut-outs from old school file covers under the legs of your furniture. This prevents direct contact with the damp floor, protecting the wood from absorbing moisture. This trick is especially effective for homes with tiled or cement floors.
Natural Furniture Polish
Mix 2 teaspoons of coconut oil with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply this mixture to wooden furniture using a soft, clean cloth. Coconut oil acts as a moisture barrier while lemon adds a natural shine. It not only protects your furniture but also makes it look refreshed.
By adopting these simple, natural, and cost-effective tricks, you can protect your wooden furniture from damage during the monsoon.
