Cyberattack and How Does it Affect Information Security

A cyberattack is an attempt to gain unauthorized access to information or devices via computer systems or networks. Attacks can be carried out by individuals or groups, including criminal organizations, hackers and state actors. They can be used for a variety of purposes, from stealing financial data to causing physical damage.

When a cyberattack hits an organization, it can disrupt normal business operations, cause financial losses and harm brand reputation. Businesses also face many costs related to the aftermath of a cyberattack, such as notification costs, revenue loss from system downtime and repair costs. In addition, companies may experience a decline in customer trust and loyalty following a data breach.

We often hear of the most dramatic cyberattacks, such as those that hit large companies like Equifax, Target or JP Morgan Chase and steal millions of personal records including social security numbers, addresses and credit card information security. However, more minor breaches happen on a regular basis that don’t make the news. A typical cyberattack consists of a bad actor exploiting a vulnerability in a software program, network or device to get unauthorized access.

While cyberattacks can be carried out for a variety of reasons, the most common motivation is monetary profit. Some attackers are just looking to steal customer data and sell it on the dark web, while others are attempting to gain competitive advantages by hacking into business networks and accessing trade secrets.

Other attack motives include retribution or engaging in cyberwarfare. These attacks are often launched by government agencies to spy on other countries and obtain information security of strategic value, or they can be done by terrorists or hackers who want to take down critical infrastructure and make a statement.

Threat actors can be classified as insiders or outsiders. Insider threats are employees who have privileged access to an organization’s networks and systems, such as IT staff. This category can also include disgruntled ex-employees who seek revenge by exposing vulnerabilities and attacking their former employers.

Outsider threats are those who don’t have access to an organization’s systems but try to gain unauthorized entry by using methods like phishing, Trojan horse and ransomware. These threats are often launched by hackers who have a love of the challenge of hacking into systems and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment when they succeed in breaking into a system.

When a company experiences a cyberattack, it can have a ripple effect throughout the community. For example, when the Colonial Pipeline was hit by a ransomware attack in 2021, it forced the company to shut down production of gasoline and diesel fuel that was then halted across the East Coast of the US. As a result, consumers experienced shortages at gas stations and airlines had to cancel or reroute flights.

While the impact of a cyberattack can be widespread, some industries are more at risk than others. The manufacturing industry, for instance, was the victim of a record-setting number of cyberattacks in 2023. This is partly due to its close interaction with people’s daily lives and the sensitive nature of their personal information.
